MARLETTE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (Map, News) - State highway 53 is hardly Michigan's busiest road, but traffic backed up for miles after about a half-dozen pigs escaped from a wrecked livestock trailer.
Their owner, a 32-year-old man from Deford, says the force of air from a passing semitrailer caused his trailer to separate from its hitch, flip end over end and come to rest on its side before being hit by a car.
The Times Herald of Port Huron says the car's driver, a 52-year-old Port Hope woman, was taken to Marlette Regional Hospital.
One pig died in the accident, and the rest weren't going to fare much better. A bystander towing an empty livestock trailer of his own volunteered to take the pigs to their destination: a game ranch where animals are hunted in a contained area.
