Concord , Calif -- The California Highway Patrol said 10 cows wandered into traffic after they escaped from a trailer on Highway 4, near the interchange with Interstate 680.

CHP officer Tom Maguire said five of the 10 cows died or had to be euthanized due to injuries sustained during collisions with passing vehicles, the Contra Costa (Calif.) Times reported Friday.

Highway patrol spokesman Sgt. Trent Cross said officers received reports of cows stampeding in traffic near Concord starting at 8:24 p.m. Thursday. He said the cows escaped from a trailer that had broken loose from its vehicle.

Police used their patrol cars to attempt to herd the cows, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

"I've never seen nothing like this. This is crazy," officer Tom Stewart said. "I'm not joking, they're everywhere."

3 families, 2 tragedies: accidents tie community

10:37 AM MDT on Tuesday, May 20, 2008

BOISE - A Sweet, ID family is coping with a devastating loss over the weekend.

Saturday morning a crash on the Sweet-Ola Highway claimed the life of David Coburn and two of his daughters – Kaitlyn, 8 and Ellie, 4. Another daughter, Taylor, 6 is in critical condition at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise.

David Coburn’s brother Hal said Taylor’s prognosis is “positive.” That good news is something the family is hanging on to during a difficult time.

The three girls were spending time with their dad Saturday – headed to a church service project at the cemetery in Sweet.

But they never made it to their destination. Coburn and his daughters died in the crash just before the cemetery.

Police say a trailer carrying pipe came loose and hit David's car, sending him off the road and into a creek.

Devin Morgan, 18 was driving the pickup carrying the trailer. He too was headed for the cemetery service project.

"They have nothing but love and outpouring for this young man that is possibly scarred with the memories of what happened that day," Hal Coburn said.

Family thankful for community support

Hal says the instant David's pickup went off the road; the community has been there, especially for David’s wife Emily.

"The outpouring of support in Sweet has been incredible and I think that’s helping Emily deal with the situation she is dealing with," Coburn said.

Hal says two families who can relate to Emily are doing anything they can to help out.

The Probst and Walker families lost their children when their car went off the road on the same highway in February 2007. In that accident, five students on their way to school died.

Now those families touched by similar tragedy – are helping the survivors of this latest accident.

"I'd like to express thanks to people like the Probst family and the Walker family, Coburn said. "The fathers - both actually - were in the water trying to rescue the girls and David."

Coburn said the Probsts have been babysitting Jaden - the Coburn's youngest girl.

The family says they are thankful for the many volunteers who tried to save David and the girls.

Paul Drake was the first person who jumped in the creek to try and rescue the family.

The first time I went in, the current caught me so I went down stream,” Drake said. “It took me three times to get out to the truck.”

Aside from the strong current- Drake says the water temperature was about 35 degrees.

The Coburn family has planned a memorial for David, Kaitlyn and Ellie this Friday at the LDS Stake Center in Emmett.

If you’d like to make a donation to the family, you can do so at any US Bank branch.

Accident Ties Up Traffic For Holiday Travelers Yet Another Loose Trailer In Maryland

Last Update: 5/26 10:09 pm
All lanes of I-95 in Harford County are back open, after a travel trailer became dislodged from the truck that was towing it. It happened Monday afternoon, just as thousands of drivers were trying to get home from their Memorial Day weekend.

Tom Igoe of Glen Burnie told ABC-2 News that he and his wife were heading back from their vacation in New Jersey, when they felt a jolt, and noticed their towed RV had broken loose. “The sway bars gave out and it flipped,” Igoe said.
It took more than an hour for two tow trucks to flip the RV back onto its wheels, and clear the area. In the meantime traffic backed up for miles in the southbound lanes of I-95.

Igoe says he believes he connected the trailer properly, so he's not sure how it broke free. No one was injured in the incident, but it could have been much worse. In May of 2007, a much smaller trailer broke free from a truck on the Bay Bridge, causing a seven-car collision in which three people died.

Tom Igoe says he's learned his lesson. “Always be careful how it's hooked up; even if it is hooked up correctly, things can happen,” he said.

State Police are investigating. So far there is no word yet on whether Igoe will face any charges in connection with the incident.

Baltimore County, MD -- A recreational trailer flipped over this afternoon while traveling southbound on I-95 past Rt -152 in White Marsh.

Propane spilled from the vehicle causing officials to shut down I-95 South. The two right lanes are now open to traffic but there are significant delays at this time. I-95 northbound is completely open.

Former Councilman Joe Wilson hurt in crash

BY EMILY BATTLE

Former City Councilman Joe Wilson was taken to Mary Washington Hospital this morning after a landscaping trailer collided with his car while he was driving on William Street.

Wilson’s injuries were said to be non-life-threatening by city police.

He was reportedly able to talk to rescue workers at the scene and never lost consciousness. The most significant injuries were to one of his hands.

Wilson, who is also chairman of the board of trustees of MediCorp Health System, parent company of the hospital, was driving a 4-door Hyundai up the hill toward William’s intersection with College Avenue when the accident occurred just before 9 a.m.

According to Fredericksburg Police, a Ford pickup pulling a medium-duty utility trailer loaded with sod was heading in the other direction on William Street.

The trailer came loose from the truck near the intersection. The trailer crossed into oncoming traffic and hit Wilson’s car head-on.

The mechanism that connected the trailer to the truck went through Wilson’s windshield, and the trailer body ended up on the hood of his car.

The driver of the truck, William Tibbs, 24, of Spotsylvania County, was charged with having an expired inspection for the trailer, having defective brakes on the trailer, having defective equipment and not wearing a seatbelt.

Tibbs was driving the truck for Commonwealth Irrigation and Landscape, the Spotsylvania County company that owns the truck and trailer.

The accident shut down William Street in both directions while Wilson was extracted from his car and taken to the hospital. The road has since reopened.

Wilson owns PermaTreat Pest Control and serves on Fredericksburg’s Economic Development Authority.
