Charges have been filed against an Elizabeth City man after the trailer he was towing on U.S. Highway 158 in Camden County Saturday unhitched and struck another car, killing the driver.
Reginald Parker Jr., 58, of the 600 block of Old Hertford Way, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and unsafe towing, according to Sgt. C.K. Parks of the N.C. Highway Patrol.
Parker was driving a Dodge pickup east on U.S. 158 about 8:30 p.m. Saturday when the trailer behind his vehicle detached, crossed the center line and struck head on the left front side of a Buick LeSabre being driven by Isaac Forbes.
Forbes, 67, of the 400 block of Trotman Road, Camden, died from the impact, the Highway Patrol said.
A passenger in the Buick, Rose Evans, 61, also of Trotman Road, suffered minor injuries in the accident.
Parker was not hurt.
Parks said the trailer Parker was towing, an old hay wagon, was structurally unsound and unsafe to tow.
The incident occurred a few miles east of the Camden Causeway.
