Britt man killed in automobile accident on Highway 18

A Britt man was killed Saturday when his vehicle was struck by a trailer that came loose from a pickup and crossed the center line in western Hancock County.
Daniel Stites, 36, was driving east on Highway 18 at 3:45 p.m. when his SUV was struck head-on by a small single-axle trailer, which had become unhooked from a westbound pickup driven by Christopher Ludwig, 20, Corwith, according to a report from the Iowa State Patrol.
The trailer did not have safety chains.
The occupants of the pickup were uninjured.
The accident remains under investigation.
The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Hancock and Kossuth County Sheriff's Department.

BRITT, Iowa — Daniel W. Stites, 36, of Britt, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009.
Memorial services for Daniel Stites will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West, in Britt with the Rev. Lee Nelson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the memorial service.
Daniel Wayne Stites, the son of Ronald and Mary (Gurzick) Stites, was born on Aug. 23, 1973, in Britt, Iowa. He was raised in Britt attending school and graduating from West Hancock High School in 1991. In high school, Daniel was involved with football and wrestling. After graduation Daniel lived in Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa working in different factories. He then moved to Owatonna for five years working for Truth Manufacturing. While there he was involved with dart tournaments, which he moved to Las Vegas to pursue further. Daniel worked as a security guard in Las Vegas and surrounding towns. He then moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where he worked in factories for two years. Finally, Daniel moved back to Britt fulltime in November 2008 working for the Pioneer Seed Company.
Daniel is survived by his mother Mary Forton of Mount Clemens, Mich.; father Ron Stites of Britt; four children: Brett Stites, Lanie Ackerman, Tanner Stites and Alicen Stites; two brothers: Russell Harriman of Pontiac, Mich., Henry Harriman of Mount Clemens, Mich.; one sister Mary Wilker of Owatonna; special friend Jen Lang of Algona; along with several other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
