PALM BAY -- A 13-year-old Boy Scout is in critical condition after he fell out of a moving trailer hitched to the rear of a sport utility vehicle.
Witnesses tell police the driver was going very slowly, as the boy and two other teens were in the back with a trailer full of phone books. The teens are part of a Boy Scout troop, and were delivering phone books as part of a fundraiser.
As the driver turned onto Willig Road, the load of phone books shifted, and the boy fell off the trailer, hitting his head on the pavement.
The driver is taking it very hard.
"He's very upset. He's said he’s been doing this for between 10 and 15 years and he’s never had a problem before. Again, it’s a scout troop, so he’s pretty upset that the entire situation happened," said Cpl. Frank Walters from the Palm Bay Police Department.
The boy was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital.
Traffic investigators are calling the incident a "freak" accident.
