Central Square (WSYR-TV) – Two horses were loose along Interstate 81 Tuesday eveningafter the trailer they were traveling in flipped over.
The accident happened around 5pm on Route 81 south between the Central Square and Brewerton exits.
Our photojournalist was at the scene as the horses were being placed into a second horse trailer that was brought to the scene. The horses were walking around the scene and appeared to be okay.

So the hitch was not locked down and the safety chains were not hooked up? Or did it hitch and safety chains break? Glad to here the horses are ok.

The owner/driver which is the gentleman in the white hat was a little shaken up (which is understandable) but he was okay. Glad to see that for the most part his horses were alright.

Okay I would like to make a correction to this story....I am a fellow horse person who saw the accident and stopped to help. The horses were trapped in the trailer, we waited for fire crews to get there to help release the horses. Once the horses were out myself, and the other women seen in the video walked the horses around so that they could eat grass while we waited for the other trailer to arrive, unfortunately I had to leave a couple of minutes before the trailer got there, but the horses were okay. AT NO POINT WERE THE HORSES LOOSE ON 81!!! They seemed to be fine, only a couple of cuts and bruises between them. A vet was going to check them out when they got to their destination in Manlius. They had been traveling from Watertown to a practice at a farm in Manlius when the trailer had come unhitched from the truck. We are not really sure how it came unhitched, I am sure the owner is looking into it. My best luck and wishes are with the horses and their owner, I hope they have a smooth ride home! And I want to thank all of the police, fire, and rescue crews that showed up in a timely fashion and helped get the horses out of the trailer! You guys (and gals) are amazing and we appreciate all that you do for us! C.Colburn
