Trailer hauling car separates from pickup, leaves road, hits trees

A race car in its trailer separated from its pickup truck this afternoon on Interstate 78 and left the road, delaying traffic in both directions for a time, police said.

At about 4:29 p.m., a pickup truck pulling a race car in a trailer was heading eastbound on I-78, west of Exit 20, when the trailer separated from the truck, left the roadway off the right shoulder and overturned, hitting a number of trees as it went, according to state police at the Perryville barracks.

Police said the right shoulder of I-78 west of Exit 20 is closed while waiting for the vehicles to be picked up by a tow truck. No injuries or violations were reported by police, and no further information on the driver was available.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation reports delays due to rubbernecking and volume on I-78 westbound.
