Horse hurt in highway crash Animal taken to N.J. for treatment; accident ties up Thruway

TUXEDO — A horse that was injured when a trailer overturned on the Thruway yesterday survived the mishap, but the crash brought traffic to a standstill during rush hour, state police said.

Joseph Rubeo of Yonkers was headed north in the Town of Tuxedo when the horse trailer he was towing began to sway around 7:30 a.m. Rubeo's vehicle struck a guardrail, causing the trailer to break loose and overturn, police said.

The horse inside the trailer, named KF Trump, suffered some cuts and bruises and was seen by veterinarian Brian MacNamara, who tranquilized the animal.

The horse, which was having a hard time standing, was transported to the Meadowlands Racetrack for further treatment.

Tuxedo and Woodbury firefighters responded to the scene.

All the northbound lanes of the Thruway were closed for nearly 90 minutes in the aftermath of the crash, backing up traffic for several miles.
