JAY - A wayward trailer slowed traffic on Route 4 on Wednesday after it came unhooked, spun out and flipped, dumping a small load of bark mulch on the road.

Brian Fournier, 31, of Jay had just left the Transfer Station heading north on Jay flats shortly after 9 a.m. when the trailer he was hauling behind his Dodge Durango let go, said Sgt. Troy Young of Jay Police Department.

The dual-axle trailer, owned by Marco Grimaldi also of Jay, spun, flipped and ended up on its side on the yellow line, Young said.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident and Fournier was not hurt but his SUV was damaged. The back window of the Durango was broken, he said. The trailer received quite a lot of damage.

By chance, a Maine Department of Transportation vehicle carrying a backhoe happened upon the scene. The crew assisted in moving the mulch from the road, Young said.

Jay Fire Department responded to the accident and Hilltop Collision Center hauled the trailer away, Young said.

SARASOTA COUNTY - A driver towing a boat caused a big back up on Interstate 75 Monday morning.

Troopers say a tire on the boat's trailer broke off near the Jacaranda Boulevard exit just after 10am. That tire hit a Scion, causing that driver to lose control and overturn in the median.

The truck that was towing the boat also lost control, resulting in the boat and trailer overturning in the median.

The driver of the Scion suffered only minor injuries. There were no reported injuries in the tow vehicle.

Traffic on the interstate was backed up for hours.

A SEAFARING motorist found himself `shipwrecked' on the M1 this morning after his boat trailer separated from a jeep.

Emergency crews were called to a northbound lane of the Pacific Motorway near Oxenford, when the trailer carrying a tinnie detached from the 4WD and became lodged in the median strip about 11am.

An RACQ tow truck was called to help remove the boat from the motorway as two police cars warned other drivers of the traffic hazard for about half an hour.

Nobody was injured in the the accident.

In an unrelated accident on Tuesday, a trailer came loose from behind a truck and crashed into a mobile home at Hall’s Manufactured Homes on Veterans Parkway.

A GMC Sierra, driven by James Edwards, of 908 Barbara Circle, was towing the trailer on South Veterans Parkway at 7:56 a.m. Tuesday. As the truck passed the 31st Avenue Southeast intersection, the trailer came off the hitch and rolled off of the roadway.

The trailer hit a Destiny mobile home at Hall’s Manufactured Homes dealership on South Veterans Parkway. The mobile home had moderate damage to its front, and the trailer had moderate damage to its right side.

No one was inside the mobile home when the accident happened, and no one was hurt.

Police are promising to get to the bottom of what they call a "very dangerous situation" – an accident involving the city's bomb squad trailer.

The 7,500-pound bomb squad trailer somehow broke free near the exit ramp from Bigelow Boulevard Thursday.

No one was hurt.

Public Safety Director Mike Huss says he's concerned.

"This is a dangerous situation and we need to be able to tow this vehicle around but we've got to make sure that this doesn't happen again," he said.

Public safety experts are painfully aware. It's happened before.

In April of 2006, an improperly installed, 6,000-pound wood chipper broke free from a truck on Route 8, killing a Cranberry man and two of his three triplets.

Last December on Route 19, a trailer came loose from a truck, killing an Ellsworth woman instantly.

It's a problem so severe that Pittsburgh Police have conducted trailer safety seminars for commercial vehicles.

Agencies from around the region have made trailer safety and enforcement a top priority.

Investigators will determine how the Pittsburgh bomb squad trailer broke free and make changes before it's used again.

"We gotta make sure first of all that everyone's trained properly, that the equipment's working properly and that something like this never happens again," Huss said.

Runaway trailer seriously hurts teen driver

RINEYVILLE — A local teen was seriously injured Monday night in a wreck on Ky. 1600 just west of Rineyville.

According to Kentucky State Police, Kaela N. Vessels, a 17-year-old Vine Grove resident, was westbound on Rineyville Road around 9 p.m. when a 12-foot utility trailer broke loose from an eastbound tow vehicle and struck the 1998 Monte Carlo Vessels was driving head-on.

Vessels initially was taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital and later was airlifted to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville for treatment of life-threatening injuries, police stated in a news release.

Kosair Children’s Hospital spokesman Bryan Reublen said the hospital listed Vessels in serious condition as of Tuesday morning.

Brandenburg resident, William L. Mills, 47, was driving the Honda minivan from which the trailer disconnected. Mills suffered no serious injuries, according to police.

As of noon Tuesday, no charges had been filed in Hardin District Court in connection to the wreck.

Kentucky State Police say they continue to investigate the crash.
